Lee Jung-jae portrays Seong Gi-hun, a divorced chauffeur and compulsive gambler who lives with his mother. Struggling financially, he takes part in the game to clear his debts and prove he can provide for his daughter, who is set to move to the United States with her mother and stepfather (seasons 1–2).
Park Hae-soo plays Cho Sang-woo, Gi-hun’s former junior classmate from Seoul National University and the ex-head of an investment team at a securities firm. He enters the game to evade the police after embezzling from his clients and accumulating huge debts from bad investments (season 1).
Wi Ha-joon is cast as Hwang Jun-ho, a dedicated police officer who sneaks into the game disguised as a guard to find his missing brother (seasons 1–2).
Jung Ho-yeon stars as Kang Sae-byeok, a defector from North Korea’s North Hamgyong Province. She joins the game to pay for a broker who can help reunite her family across the border and buy them a safe house (season 1).
O Yeong-su plays Oh Il-nam, an elderly man with a brain tumor who chooses to play the game rather than wait to die outside and is eventually revealed as the main antagonist (season 1).
Heo Sung-tae portrays Jang Deok-su, a ruthless gangster participating in the game to clear his substantial gambling debts and repay money he stole from his boss and subordinates (season 1).
Anupam Tripathi plays Ali Abdul, a migrant worker from Pakistan who enters the game to support his young family after his employer refuses to pay him for months (season 1).
Kim Joo-ryoung takes on the role of Han Mi-nyeo, a loud and manipulative woman whose reasons for joining the game remain unknown (season 1).
